Tim Westwood: Hip-Hop’s Open Secret

In 2022 I worked on the BBC Three documentary Tim Westwood: Hip Hop’s Open Secret as one of their journalism researchers. Since the story broke in April I was tasked with monitoring the BBC’s channels for women who needed someone to speak with about their experiences. I spent the majority of spring 2022 listening to these women tell their stories and being a comforting voice for them to feel safe to speak with. Being the first point of contact for these women was very important and involved a great deal of care. My work helped verfiy the stories of other victims and some voices were used in the documentary.

The Metaverse: How Safe Is It For Children?

In the winter of 2022 I went undercover for the BBC posing as a thirteen year-old girl in the metaverse to measure the safety of the Oculus headset. Whilst in VRChat, an app that comes preinstalled on the headset I was exposed to explicit language, hyper-sexual imagery, sexual harassment and sexual assault. The project involved wearing the headset for long periods of time, communicating with people online and staying in character as a thirteen year-old. Working with Angus Crawford and Tony Smith was such an amazing experience and I gained valuable skills in undercover journalism and being the face of an investigation. The piece aired on BBC News and BBC Breakfast, where I was invited to Media City to speak about my experiences live on air with Sally Nugent and Dan Walker.
